Being a telemarketer can be challenging. Most of the time, you get rejected, no matter how much you try. There are ups and downs in the telemarketing, there are good days as there are bad. If you have become frustrated because you have always fallen short of your goals, this article will try to give you some helpful tips to improve your stats.

Here are 10 tips to help you improve your telemarketing skills:

  1. Remember that rejection will always be a part of your job. It is wise not to take rejection personally.
  2. Always have a positive attitude. It is always nice to speak with someone who is enthusiastic and lively. If you sound sleepy and boring over the phone you will have a hard time attracting new prospects.
  3. It is necessary to be always prepared before you even start calling. Are you ready with your script? How well do you know the product or service that you are going to sell? It is vital to closing a sale how well you answer your prospect’s questions. Being prepared and knowledgeable makes it easier for you to make quick rebuttals. If it takes too long for you to answer, it would be hard to sustain the interest of a prospect that will be another lost sale.
  4. Be sure to have a good telemarketing script. Having a script can be tricky since most telemarketers make the mistake of reading or memorizing the script too much that they often sound robotic and monotonous. Let your script be just a guide so that you don’t miss out on important points. It is not that important that you memorize the entire script you only need to make sure that you know what you are talking about.
  5. Learn to build rapport with the prospect. Asking questions and actually listening to your prospect’s response is essential to building rapport. Be observant. While pulling up the prospect’s name, you might have noticed that the prospect has an unusual name, you can say, “You have a unique name Sir/Ma’am. Is there a story behind it?” If the prospect warms up to you, then closing a sale would be a breeze.
  6. Ask qualifying questions. These questions are used in order to determine which prospects meet the specific criteria and whom you are likely to close a sale. This strategy will enable you to manage your talk time since you don’t need to waste your time with prospects that won’t qualify.
  7. A good telemarketer has excellent listening skills. Active listening is different from just hearing. Active listening involves being alert to buying signals. This will also help you know and understand what are the needs and concerns of the prospect.
  8. You also need to develop using strategic pauses. When you ask a question or utter a comment, give your prospect time to respond. This will give your prospect the time to think before making any decision. Do not bombard your prospect with questions after questions without giving them a chance to respond. Your prospect will lose interest if you keep on dominating the conversation.
  9. Be considerate. Try to put yourself in a prospect’s shoes. It is not proper to call a prospect in the wee hours of the evening, as well as too early in the morning. Timing is important in the telemarketing business.
  10. Lastly, be sure to breathe and do not worry too much about the numbers. Just be confident and everything will follow.
