Appen was founded in 1996 by the Julie Vonwiller, PhD motivated by her passion for language and technology. The company was originally founded for to provide linguists graduates to build their careers and follow their passions in a global, technology-driven space. The name Appen was derived from the Swiss canton Appenzell, from which some of Chris’s ancestors came to Australia in the nineteenth century. In 2010, Appen merged with the Butler Hill Group which expanded the company’s business scope to include language resources, search, and text.
